We insist that centrally planned economies stifle growth-but many developing countries had higher GDP growth before they were pressured into deregulating their economies. HA-JOON CHANG is a lecturer in development economics and institutional economics at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Economics and Politics. He has written numerous publications on topics as diverse as state theories, institutional economics, privatization, industrial strategy, and the East Asian development experience. He's also co-edited two books: The Transformation of Communist Economies: Against the Mainstream (also from Macmillan) and The Role of the State in Economic Development (with Robert Rowthorn).
