Barnaby Volume One by Daniel Clowes
The subtle ironies and playful allusions used by Crockett Johnson in depicting the adventures of five year old Barnaby Baxter and his fairy godfather, Jackeen J. O'Malley means it remains a critical favourite. 'Barnaby' revolves around a precocious five year old named Barnaby Baxter and his fairy godfather, Jackeen, who is a cigar chomping, fast talking yet bumbling con artist. Jackeen's grasp of magic is specious at best, however he is aided by his unusual collective of friends. The deft balance of fantasy, political commentary and sophisticated wit will delight.Crockett Johnson (1906-1975), a political cartoonist, began his artistic career. Johnson went on to become a comic strip artist, producing Who (1952). He also wrote and illustrated over 20 children's books, as well as contributing pictures (but not the plot) for seven more (starting with This Rich World in 1943 and ending with The Carrot Seed in 1945). Harold, the protagonist of his best-known series, first appeared in Harold and the Purple Crayon (1955), and was followed by Harold (1956), Harold (1957), Harold at the North Pole (1958), Harold (1959), Harold at the North Pole (1960), Harold (1959), Harold at the North Pole (1960), Harold at the North Pole (1960), Harold at the North Pole (1960), Harold at the North Pole (1960), Harold at the North Pole (1960), Harold at the North Pole (1960), Harold at the North Pole
