Barnsley's Sporting Heroes by Annie Storey

Barnsley has a long tradition of sporting excellence and achievement at both individual and team level. This first volume aims to cover a spread of people from most major sports, as well as some from so called minorities. It also includes many coaches, trainers and mentors who have usually voluntarily had a large impact on so many of our young sportsmen and women.Several inclusions relate to characters whose sporting and associated achievements have gained widespread recognition: Dorothy Hyman, Gloria Goldsbrough, John Mayock, Martyn Moxon, Harold 'Dickie' Bird, Roy Kilner, Tommy Taylor, Mark Jones and comedian Charlie Williams; but equally, many less known personalities are rightfully remembered and appreciated through Annie's investigative writing. The book is dedicated to the former Barnsley teacher, wrestler and actor Brian Glover whose death was announced whilst the book was going to press. The book concludes with a chapter by Keith Lodge on Wilson's Wonders, the Barnsley Football Team 96-97, who gained one of the most remarkable sporting achievements of the modern era.
