BATTLES IN FOCUS BATTLE OF MIDWAY by Philip Grove
This turning point of the Pacific Sea War saw the Japanese send 88 ships to attack the small island of Midway, 1000 miles west of Hawaii. From 3-5 June 1942 fearsome air attacks by both parties failed to achieve an advantage until dive bombers from two US aircraft carriers finally accounted for three Japanese carriers, and then more. The US lost planes, ships and men but the Japanese losses were much heavier and the way was open for American-Australian counter-offensives. This "In Focus" series title is the first to deal with a major naval action and introduces the series to a broader market of historians, serving officers, modellers and students of 20th century naval warfare.
Philip Grove lectures at the Royal Britannia Naval College, Dartmouth and has wriiten many articles and contributed to several books. He lives in South Devon
