Battles of the Dark Ages by Peter Marren

Britain was a place of conflict in the Dark Ages, between the departure of the Romans and the Norman Conquest. Clashes of allegiance, competition for territory and resources, and intense rivalries among the warlords and kings gave rise to frequent outbreaks of fighting. This was the time of legendary military leaders, like Arthur, Alfred and Canute, and of literally hundreds of battles. In this fascinating book, Peter Marren investigates this confused era of warfare, looks for the reality behind the myths, and uses the techniques of modern scholarship to show how battles were fought in that brutal age, where they were fought, and why.

Peter Marren is a naturalist and former government and freelance conservationist who specializes in natural history. He is a wildlife polymath whose work includes newspaper journalism, obituaries, book reviews, and opinion pieces, as well as humour and news summaries for publications such as Whitaker's Almanack. A quarter-million-word cultural survey of invertebrates (Bugs Britannica), a bibliographic biography (The New Naturalists), a study of rarity (Britain's Rare Flowers), art critique (Art of the New Naturalists), urban wildlife (A Natural History of Aberdeen), and humour (Twitching in the Swamp) are only a few of his twenty publications. Since 1990, he has contributed to every issue of British Wildlife, including numerous articles and news stories about fungi. He leads fungal treks into the wilds of Wiltshire and Berkshire on a regular basis.
