The BBC National Short Story Award 2018 by Stig Abell

The 2018 BC National Short Story Award has just been announced and for its thirteenth year it is collaborating with Cambridge University. Headlining this year's judging panel is Mel Giedroyc; best known for The Great British Bake Off, she has also published the books From Here to Maternity, as well as, Going Ga-Ga, and is currently working on her third.

She will be joined by 2016's BC NSA winner K J Orr; one of last year's shortlisted writers Benjamin Markovits; award winning poet and Cambridge alumni Sarah Howe; and Di Speirs, #BCNSA judging regular since its launch in 2006. Although the award has a new partnership, short fiction is still at the core of the competition, and the judges are looking for original, enticing work.
Mel Giedroyc was born in Epsom District Hospital in 1968. She looked like a frog and none of the midwives would pick her up. Her first word was 'Leatherhead'. Mel has made literally hundreds of TV and radio appearances, and does her bit in the comedy double act Mel and Sue. She lives in London with her husband and two daughters.
