Becoming Belle da Costa Greene by Deborah Parker
Summer is here Ah Wen and her little sister dug out Granpa's antique kite. They fixed it up with brand new tails and took it out for a flight. However, the string broke and the kite disappeared inside an ancient yard. Ah Wen climbed over the wall to fetch the kite, but unexpectedly stumbled into a bizarre land, where a fascinating adventure started. In this curious place, Ah Wen encountered many wild things. Over the hills and around the river, she arrived at a wonderland where kind villagers resided. With their help, Ah Wen prepared for her journey across the dangerous Sleeping Island. Guided by her determination to find the antique kite and her little sister, Ah Wen overcame her fear and successfully crossed the island. Ah Wen finally found the antique kite at a market, and was happily reunited with her little sister. They followed a long road which led them home outside the ancient yard. Although everything seemed the same, Ah Wen knew, with the courage and love that she discovered during the adventure, life would be forever different. Follow Ah Wen to explore the wonders behind the ancient wall, but don't get scared by all the wild things in this mysterious land
The ample cache of letters Greene left behind, gathered…in [this book]…reveals an indefatigably witty, puckish soul who savored books and art, had an active social life and loved gossip and a good story-- John McWhorter * New York Times *
Depicts the career of this great scholar of manuscripts and early printed books through Greene’s letters, mainly to her mentor and lover Bernard Berenson, while also providing insightful connecting commentary. The result makes for compelling reading on multiple levels, not least for its evocation of the last years of the Gilded Age. -- Michael Dirda * Washington Post *
Offers readers insight not only into the creation of one of America’s foremost scholarly institutions, but also into the art and craft of writing as a powerful means of self-transformation. -- Timothy Kircher * Humanities Watch *
A nimble study that touches on a wide range of subjects…more than anything, [Greene’s] correspondence with Berenson communicates the vivacity of a woman, rare in her time, for whom the personal sphere…and the professional one were inseparable. These excerpts testify to the scope of her interests and competencies. -- Francesca Trivellato * Il Sole 24 Ore *
