A Beginner's Guide to Critical Reading by Richard Jacobs

A Beginner's Guide to Critical Reading brings literature to life by combining a rich selection of literary texts with original and lively commentary. Unlike so many introductions to literary studies, it vividly demonstrates how criticism and theory can enhance your own enjoyment and appreciation of literature. Aimed at AS, A2 and undergraduate students, Richard Jacobs draws a map of English Literature which is fresh and distinctive and which offers guidance to many familiar landmarks. In the process he shows that studying literature can be a source of huge pleasure and interest.

'Richard Jacob's anthology is one of the most refreshing and lively collections I have read in a long timeHe has a direct (and often humorous) way of addressing his readers, by inviting them to taste both the literature and the critical approaches, to share in his delight at the feast laid before them with no risk of forcefeeding. Everybody will find something to delight them in this book.' - - Carol Fox, The Times Educational Supplement

'an interesting and challenging resource for teachers and enthusiastic students.' - The English and Media Magazine

'This book is essential reading: it takes an exciting journey through the history of English Literature. Richard Jacobs has selected juicy morsels then added significant commentary. It's 481 pages have already become part of my life. This book is highly recommended.' - Trevor Lockwood, Author.co.uk

'All teachers of A level and undergraduate English courses, and their students, will find something of interest in this book. It is a hopeful signpost towards the future of post-16 English Studies.' - NATE

'This series is an excellent example of the need within academia to encourage an awareness of theoretical issues in students.' - Will Slocombe, English

Jacobs, Richard: - Richard Jacobs graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1954, with a degree in business. He earned Phi Beta Kappa and other honors. After military service and a career in the life insurance business, he graduated from Stetson University College of Law in 1967, Magna Cum Laude, first in his class. He was admitted to practice in June 1967, after achieving the high score on the March 1967 Florida Bar examination. As a practicing lawyer, he attained an Av rating and was included in Best Lawyers in America. He is also a member of Stetson University Collage of Law's Hall of Fame. After more than five decades practicing business law, he mostly retired in 2013; and, in 2014, wrote Wonderlust, the stories of the lessons learned in his trekking the seven continents. His civic activities have included his being chairman and trustee of his community hospital and arts center and serving as a trustee of his law school and other educational institutions. Motivated by the lessons learned in his travels, he also devoted his attention to environmental, sea-level rise, and global warming issues, as a writer, speaker, and a lawyer, working particularly close with Our Children's Trust and Stetson College of Law. Democracy of Dollars grew out of his experiences in being thwarted in problem-solving environmental issues by government inaction when action is needed. A lawyer by training, a photographer by passion, he has been fortunate to have trekked and photo'd on the seven continents - and those experiences have shaped his life and understanding the nature of our responsibilities for the care of each other and our earth, the only home we will ever have.
