Li Juan was born in Xinjiang in 1979 and raised in Sichuan Province. She learnt to sew as a child and ran a tiny convenience store with her mother in a town where nomads frequented. She then went on to work in a factory in Urumqi. She started working as a public servant in 2003 and left in 2008 to pursue her dream of becoming a full-time author. Her career as a columnist for newspapers such as Southern Weekly and Hong Kong's Wenweipo began in 1999.

Li Juan's writing has won numerous accolades and she is widely considered as one of the best narrative nonfiction writers of her generation. WINTER PASTURE is widely regarded as her most well-known and representative work.
