Behind the Battle: by R Bennett
This study surveys and analyzes the military intelligence available to Britain and her allies during World War II. In 1939, Britain was as ill-prepared in intelligence as in armaments. Improvements began in 1941, and Ultra was ultimately responsible for winning the Battle of the Atlantic.
Ralph Bennett was a leading producer of Ultra at Bletchley Park during the war, and over the last twenty years his many publications - notably his books Ultra in the West and Ultra and Mediterranean Strategy - have established his high reputation as an intelligence historian. Originally a medievalist, he was elected a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1938, and taught medieval history in college and university before and after the war. He retired as President of Magdalene in 1982 and now lives in Teddington.
