Behind the Fourth Wall by Roland Barthes

In 18th century theatre, Denis Diderot's 'Fourth Wall' stood for the imaginary partition between the spaces of the stage and the auditorium, between the worlds of the imagination and reality. Its purpose was to facilitate aesthetic experience of the ?ctitious within the real today, the questioning of the 'constructed' nature of reality is associated with the aim of deeply exploring (media) production of endless new models for reality and life. This catalogue seeks an encounter with the mechanisms of illusion, using the 'Fourth Wall' as an analytical tool to expose the many layers of a near impenetrable reality. Published to accompany the exhibition at Generali Foundation, Vienna, June ndash; August 2010. English and German text.
