Belarus by Nigel Roberts

Belarus is perhaps the most inaccessible, unknown and misunderstood country in Europe. This new guide - the first to focus on the Republic of Belarus - therefore offers a rare opportunity to study a country and its people as they really are, before the rest of the world catches on. Anyone with an interest in history and sociology will be fascinated by the continuation of traditional rural pastimes and industries; there are also vast areas of marshes, lakes and rivers, which are of particular appeal to ecologists and environmentalists.

Nigel Roberts initially visited Belarus in 2001 and spent 14 years there working on sustainable development initiatives with rural populations affected by the Chernobyl disaster. He is a Russian speaker and was a lawyer by profession, however he has since put that life behind. His interest in the former Soviet Union began when he was a child, and he has subsequently researched and traveled extensively in the region. Since the first edition of this Bradt guide was published, he has written for a variety of print and online publications about his travels in Belarus, notably about the deep relationships he has formed with towns and families in the Vetka district. Over the course of 16 years, he has built an extensive network of contacts in Belarus, including ordinary citizens, broadcast, print, and internet journalists, the tourism business, local government, central government agencies, and diplomats.
