Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) is considered to be the greatest of the Western Fathers of the Church. After a tumultuous, carnal, and worldly youth, albeit with great academic success, he converted to the Catholic Faith in his early thirties and quickly rose to be the most influential bishop and theologian of his age. The editor has updated the language in the text for the benefit of the modern reader, while seeking to maintain the beauty and solemnity of language of this great saint.
