Best Practices by Habib William Kherbek
What begins as a management manual, written by the 'ethical entrepreneur' Graham Price, slowly morphs into the bizarre autobiography of a monomaniacal narcissist. From his work as a university fundraiser in London, to his 'inspired' Richard III style marketing campaign for the Scoliosis Partnership, to his eventual arrival in the African country of Z, Prices' quest to do well out of doing good leads to a series of increasingly compromised-and dangerous-partnerships. A scabrous and timely satire of corporate charity and NGO culture.
In a period where it's become fashionable and then predictable to declare the failure of satire, Kherbek reinvigorates the mode so convincingly you wonder how you ever questioned it Best Practices, like all his novels, is full of clairvoyant insight and uncanny imagining, capable of reaffirming any lapsed faith in irony as the most incisive rhetorical tool of real artistsA writer who might easily guess the immediate future. Sam Riviere ---------- A mischievous, sharp, very funny story about the special horror of good intentions. Daisy Hildyard ---------- A joyride by one of Britain's most energetic young writing talents. Gilda Williams ---------- An astute character piece, an uproarious farce, and a stark satirical comment on the world of self-serving NGOs and third-world aid programmes. The Manchester Review of Books ---------- A true one off not to be missed. Creatrix Mag ---------- A Burley Fisher Staff Pick
