In 1999, ESPN declared him coach of the decade, and in 2007, an online ESPN poll named him the greatest college football coach of all time. He received the Jim Thorpe Lifetime Achievement Award and the Tuss McLaughry Award for distinguished service to others after being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Tom was elected to the United States Congress. In 2000, he was elected to the House of Representatives and served for six years in Congress. He is now the University of Nebraska's Athletic Director.
