The Bible by James Moffatt
Once called the original modern-language Bible, Moffatt's translation began the trend of popular English translations geared toward the general Christian reader.Born and educated in Glasgow, Scotland, James Moffatt (1870-1944) spent his early years as a preacher in the Free Church of Scotland. He became Professor of Greek and New Testament Exegesis at Mansfield College, Oxford, in 1911, and afterwards served as Washburn Professor of Church History at United Free Church College, Glasgow, and Union Theological Seminary, New York. Moffatt was a key figure in the development of the Revised Standard Version (1946), as well as a prolific author of biblical textual criticism publications. Moffatt, on the other hand, is best known for translating the Bible by himself. His New Bible was published in 1913, and the Old Testament was published in 1924. Moffatt's Bible was created by combining both translations and reprinting them in 1935.
