The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz by Leonard Feather

Focusing exclusively on biographies, this jazz encyclopaedia contains portraits of 3300 jazz figures and includes extensive coverage of players in Europe, Japan, Africa and Australia, as well as the United States, Canada and Latin America. Each biographical entry contains basic information about the jazz player involved, including details of which bands or groups the artist played with, major recordings and chief jazz influences.

Since 1951, when he penned the first of innumerable LP and CD comments, Ira Gitler's writing has helped to illuminate the jazz world. In the 1960s, he was the New York editor of Downbeat, and he continues to contribute to it, as well as to JazzTimes and other online sites. Recordings and concerts are among his credentials as a producer, and he also teaches jazz history at the Manhattan School of Music. His works include Jazz Masters of the 1940s and Swing to Bop, the latter of which he wrote while a Guggenheim fellow. He currently resides in New York City.
