Margaret Docherty, a Hartlepool, England native, began sewing as a child. In the late 1980s, she grew interested in quilting and was highly affected by the work and writings of American quilters. Her major passion is traditional hand applique, but she has dabbled with a wide range of methods and styles. She fits quilting into her hectic schedule as a pediatrician by sewing largely at night, a habit she picked up as a junior hospital doctor.
