Black Cat 2-1 by Bob Ford
They came in at 2:00 a.m. without any warning. The screaming roar from the rockets' propellant was deafening, and all my senses froze as I tried to figure out what was happening. When the rockets came over our hooches on their way to our helicopters 150 meters north of our living quarters, they were no higher than one hundred feet above us. . . . At that instant, a rocket struck in the middle of the compound. . . . I was suddenly floating eight feet in the air looking down at some guy on a bunk.In the Vietnam War, 2,197 helicopter pilots and 2,717 crew members were killed. Black Cat 2-1 is the story of one pilot who made it home and the valiant men he served with who risked their lives for the troops on the ground. Bob Ford brings readers into the Huey helicopters he flew on the missions when he and his men dared to protect and rescue. For readers who served in Vietnam, the story of the Black Cats recreates the danger they survived. For others who know little about this war, Ford invites them into the cockpit to learn firsthand what Black Cat 2-1 really means. For those whose voices were silenced in that faraway place or who have never told their stories, Ford creates a tribute that reads like a thriller, captures the humor of men at war, and resounds with respect for those who served with honor.
Bob Ford has lived all but three years of his life in the hills of Pennsylvania. The three exilic years were spent attending seminary at The Methodist Theological School in Ohio where he lamented the lack of topography that characterizes the central portion of the Buckeye state. He purchased his first beagle for $75 in 1985 with money earned delivering the Erie Sunday Times. This first beagle committed Ford to the company of hounds, and has resulted in a life that has gone to the dogs. Bob has hunted rabbits and hare throughout the country, ranging from Northern Alabama to the Quebec border, and he is always looking for new places to hunt and new species of rabbits and hare for his hounds to pursue. He is an ordained pastor in the Susquehanna Conference of The United Methodist Church and currently resides in Clearfield County, PA. Ford believes that American-made, double barrel,16 gauge shotguns from the previous century are the best firearms available to the small game hunter, and that few things compare to the sound of a pack of beagles chasing rabbits on morning dew in a foggy valley. He writes a monthly column that can be found in Better Beagling magazine. You can find more at www.betterbeagling.com.
