Black-Eyed Susan by Jennifer Armstrong
A lyrical novel about a day in the life of a young pioneer girl growing up on the Dakota prairie is now available in a Knopf Paperback edition. This widely praised and beautifully crafted tale deftly evokes the vast expanse of the American West, the hardships faced by pioneer families, and the strong bonds of family and community.Jennifer Armstrong knew she wanted to be an novelist since she was in first grade. She had a lot of fun making up stories and telling them to others. Her family valued literature, therefore she became a voracious reader of all genres of fiction. It was no surprise that she chose Smith College in Massachusetts to study English and American Literature. Armstrong has written nearly 50 novels for youngsters ranging in age from kindergarten to high school.
She's best recognized for her historical fiction, but she's also written picture books, easy readers, chapter books, young adult novels, and nonfiction. Armstrong presently resides in Saratoga Springs, New York, after growing up outside of New York City. With Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, Jennifer Armstrong won the Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction. The American Library Association and the International Reading Association have named many of her novels Notable Books.
