Black Holes and Uncle Albert by Russell Stannard
This is the second book that describes the scientific processes of eccentric Uncle Albert as he and Gedanken, his 13 year old niece, explore the mysteries of time and space. This time they elaborate on the General Theory of Relativity, enter the world of the thought bubble and explore the land of the short-sighted beetles and their horrible professor. Join Dick the talking computer in an investigation of the Moon and the stars. Go for a space walk and marvel at the mysteries of the universe. This fantasy story manages to describe scientific theories in an entertaining manner. This book is designed as a companion volume to "The Time and Space of Uncle Albert" and introduces children to the theory of time and space that was Einstein's General Theory of Relativivty.
Russell Stannard was formerly Professor of Physics at the Open University at Milton Keynes. He has travelled widely in Europe and the USA, researching high energy nuclear physics. He has received the Templeton UK project award and has spent a year in America as a Visiting Fellow at the Center of Theological Theory, Princeton. He was recently awarded an OBE for services to physics and the popularisation of science.Married with four children of his own and three stepchildren, he vividly remembers the excitement of discovering Einstein's theories for the first time and he is dedicated to passing this inspiration on the new generations. The Time and Space of Uncle Albert was shortlisted for both the Science Award and the Whitbread Award, and his books have been translated into seventeen different languages.Faber publishes his new novel, Virtutopia, in May 2003.
