The Blazing Salads Cookbook by Lorraine Fitzmaurice
It all began more than thirty years ago when the Fitzmaurice family decided to adopt a strictly wholefood diet. It was not easy; ingredients were scarce and there was little popular understanding of the benefits of wholefoods. But to the Fitzmaurice’s the benefits were soon evident in high energy levels and a general sense of well being. A passion for real food was born and led, almost inevitably, to the opening of a wholefood/vegetarian restaurant. Also contained in the book is background information on wholefoods and their preparation and detailed instructions on how to cook delicious meals using natural and seasonal ingredients without the use of sugar or other artificial additives.Lorraine Fitzmaurice and her siblings had quite an unusual upbringing when it came to food. They were raised on macrobiotic cooking and their lunch boxes were the subject of much discussion in 1970s Irish classrooms. As revolutionary as it was at the time, this kind of cooking has become part and parcel of what it is to eat well today.
Lorraine and her siblings opened the Blazing Salads deli on Dublin's Drury Street in 2000 when she and her sister realized one lunch break that there was nowhere for vegetarians to get decent food. It continues to be a popular place among vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.
Lorraine lives with her family in Clontarf, Dublin.
