The Body Where I Was Born by Guadalupe Nettel
From a psychoanalyst's couch, the narrator looks back on her bizarre childhood, in which she was born with a birth defect. Her family were intent on fixing it and somehow the narrator has survived the emotional havoc she went through, however she has not emerged completely unscathed. This intimate narrative echoes the voice of the narrator's younger self, a sharp, sensitive girl keen to life's hardships. With bare language and smart humour, both delicate and unafraid, the narrator strings a strand of touching moments together to create a portrait of childhood.
Guadalupe Nettel (Mexico City, 1973) was voted one of the thirty-nine most important Latin American writers under the age of thirty-nine at the 2006 Bogota Hay Festival. She is the author of Juegos de artificio (False Games), Les jours fossils (Fossil Days), Petalos y otras historias incomodas (Petals and other Awkward Stories), El huesped (The Host), El cuerpo en que naci (The Body Where I Was Born) and El matrimonio de los peces rojos (Natural Histories). She is the recipient of the Radio France International Award, the Anna Seghers prize, the Prix Antonin Artaud, the Gilberto Owen Short Story Prize and the Ribera del Duero Prize, and her work has been translated into more than ten languages. She lives in Mexico City.

She has worked on books by many authors, such as Guadalupe Nettel, Juan Pablo Villalobos, Enrique Vila-Matas, Hector Abad, and Elvira Navarro. Her translations have been shortlisted for prizes, including the Guardian First Book Award, the Arts Foundation Award, and the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize.
