Boojums All the Way through by N David Mermin

Boojums All the Way Through is a collection of essays that deals in a variety of ways with the problem of communicating modern physics to both physicists and non-physicists. The author is Professor David Mermin, a well-known theoretical physicist, who recently won the first Julius Edgar Lileinfeld prize of the American Physical Society 'for his remarkable clarity and wit as a lecturer to nonspecialists on difficult subjects'. David Mermin's wry humour is clearly apparent in most of these articles, but even those that are more serious are characterized by a liveliness and commitment to finding startlingly simple ways of presenting ideas that are traditionally regarded as complex. This book will appeal to physicists at all levels, to mathematicians, scientists and engineers, and indeed to anyone who enjoys reading non-technical accounts of new ways of looking at modern science.
"..covers an astonishing broad range...Mermin is a natural philosopher par excellence..." Physics World
"A warm, human, and humane view of physics." American Mathematical Monthly
"From the outset, Mermin's writing is fluid, interesting and most of all, fun! Mermin's humorous talents are indicative of his creative abilities and deep understanding of his subject. At times one is tempted to reflect upon other skilled communicators, and flattering parallels with Feynman, for example, are not unreasonable." Physics in Canada
"David Mermin is one of those rather rare scientists who can write with cleverness and style....is delightful for browsing." Peter Franken, Physics Today
"Readers from undergraduate science students to professional physicists and mathematicians will find this book both entertaining and full of ideas." Perry Smith, Mathematical Reviews

N.David Mermin is Cornell University's Horace White Professor of Physics Emeritus. He has received the American Physical Society's Lilienfeld Prize and the American Association of Physics Teachers' Klopsteg Award. He is a member of the U.S. military. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Professor Mermin has written on quantum basic topics for decades and is noted for his scientific publications' clarity and humour.

Solid State Physics (co-authored with N.) is one of his other books. It's about Time: Understanding Einstein's Relativity (Princeton University Press 2005), Boojums All the Way Through (Cambridge University Press 1990), and It's about Time: Understanding Einstein's Relativity (W.Ashcroft, Thomson Learning 1976).
