The Book of Overthinking by Gwendoline Smith
YOUR BRAIN ISN'T BROKEN. YOU'RE JUST STUCK IN A LOOP. LEARN HOW TO FREE YOURSELF FROM THE CYCLE OF WORRY. If you're someone who constantly replays conversations in your head, jumps to the worst-case scenario in every situation, and spirals into negative thought patterns easily, it's time to break the cycle of worry and start trusting yourself. Psychologist and bestselling author Gwendoline Smith explains why your brain might do this, and simple techniques and tools to stop the negative loop. With simple exercises and by understanding your mind, you can stop ruminating on the past, and move more confidently into the future. Based on cognitive behavioural therapy, this book will help you quiet your brain's negativity: from your personal life to relationships and work. What could you do if you didn't overthink it? RATED FIVE STARS BY READERS 'This book has been amazing... I plan on reading it again and doing all the exercises' 'Really helpful in starting me on the road to more positive thinking' 'I love this book, the thought virus section was so relatable' 'Crammed full of insights, wisdom, and practical advice'
Smith's book, based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), provides a language to articulate things that can feel hard to express - compulsive unwanted thoughts, for instance, are called 'thought viruses'Her table of worries, where she estimates that only 8 per cent of our worries are 'real' worries and only half of those can we actually do anything about, is intriguing. The message is not to stop thinking about the things that matter, but to stop thinking about the 96 per cent of things that don't and that we cannot do anything about. Smith's thoughts on the roots of overthinking resonate deeply with me. In particular the impact of 'role modelling' - whereby a child mimics the behaviour of their parent - prompts me to realise that my ruminative nature is, if not inevitable, then extremely likely, as I grew up in a family of overthinkers. -- Pandora Sykes * Sunday Times *
