The Book of Tea by Okakura Kakuzo shows how Tea has affected nearly every aspect of Japanese culture, thought, and life. The book is accessible to Western audiences because, though Kakuzo was born and raised Japanese, he was trained from a young age to speak English. In this book he explains tea in the context of Zen and Taoism as well as the secular aspects of Tea and Japanese life.
Okakura, Kakuzo: - Kakuzō Okakura (1863-1913) communicated the culture of Japan to the West at a time when the country was opening up to Western influence and was in danger of losing its traditions. A national figure in the art world, he travelled to America, Europe, India and China, and in his later years became the head of the Asian art division at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
