A shy, lonely boy finds a jackdaw's nest and, on impulse, steals an egg. When the egg hatches, the boy nurtures the baby jackdaw and soon they are inseparable. One day the baby bird is stolen and the boy realizes how the mother bird must have felt. The author/illustrator also wrote "The Last Dodo".
