One Hundred Years of Hill Farming

One Hundred Years of Hill Farming by Geoffrey H Cole

Born into the Great Depression, Geoffrey Cole walked six miles a day to attend primary school in Caldbeck, until in 1938 the new Hartness Bus Service enabled him to attend Nelson School as a day pupil. In 1946 he went up to Cambridge to study Agriculture. After graduation he served in the Army and then worked in Public Relations at the Ford Motor Company. But like his father he yearned for the countryside and returned to the fells, commencing farming on an upland holding in Yorkshire before returning to the family farm at Caldbeck and later buying 'Bramley', a run-down Lakeland hill farm, in the 1960s. To finance the operation he retrained at Newcastle University and became a lecturer in Local History and Environmental Studies at the West Cumbria College. One Hundred Years of Hill Farming combines Geoffrey Cole's observations and experiences of farming and living in a National Park with the abundant records left by his father, completing a family farming record of one hundred years.
