The Technique of Bobbin Lace

The Technique of Bobbin Lace by Pamela Nottingham

This is an introduction to bobbin lace by the author of "The Technique of Torchon Lace". Pamela Nottingham explains the basic stitches and techniques and provides a progressive series of patterns to work through, starting with clear geometric shapes which gain in complexity until the reader can master the most intricate and lavish of the traditional designs. Each stage is accompanied by line diagrams and prickings, while photographs display the finished lace patterns. The principles of lace design are fully explained, enabling the reader to create original patterns for specific uses. Many new ideas are included. The first section introduces the equipment and preparations and covers the various terms and methods used. The next three sections provide instructions for making the main types of lace: Torchon, Bedfordshire or Beds-Maltese and Cluny, and Bucks Point. Braids and trimmings are discussed in the fifth section, with particular reference to the application of traditional lace patterns for modern use in dress and upholstery. An appendix sets out the eleven grades required for the various patterns and there is a list of useful sources of supply.
