Boston by David Cuppleditch

Boston, Lincolnshire, has been nicknamed 'the capital of the Fens'. Its heritage through the ages has been influenced by both religious institutions and its port. In many ways it is closer to some of the continental cities of Europe than to England and yet this town is very English. Dominated by The Stump - the largest parish church in England - Boston has experienced religious upheavals as well as the demon drink. Overshadowed these days by its American sister-town of Boston, Massachusetts, it still retains a stoic and highly individual resistance to change. Since photography came into widespread use, Bostonian photographers, such as Caleb Smith, F. Beales, Luigi Cella, the Addy brothers and C. Faulkner have compiled an archive of material for future generations to look back on. This selection give an insight into some of the buildings and people that made the modern Boston - a busy, hard-working town, bustling with activity.
