Alan Duff was born in 1950 and currently resides in Havelock North, New Zealand, with his wife and four children. Once Were Warriors and One Night Out Stealing are his novels; State Ward is a novella; and Maori: The Crisis and the Challenge is a nonfiction piece. Once Were Warriors, Duff's novel, won the PEN Best First Book for Fiction Prize and was adapted into a critically praised film, for which Duff authored the original screenplay.
