Bounce by Robert J Wicks

Enriching the balance and meaning of life by better understanding stress and creating your own self-care protocol, Bounce shows you how to live life to the fullest. People are naturally drawn to information on how to improve self-care, create a richer circle of friends, develop and maintain a healthy perspective, and, especially now, the importance of seeing "alone-time" not simply as forced isolation but a venue for new personality development. This aids self-awareness and understanding and improves emotional intellect so we don't react but instead pause to reflect and process life as it unfolds. The original edition of Bounce addressed these areas but then came Covid-19, intense political strife, and increased divisiveness within countries, families, communities, and even faith traditions. The need to greet, successfully adjust to, and even benefit from, such unexpected and broad-reaching change, personally threatening challenges, and stress is of even greater importance now. In addition, styles of living which were taken for granted, such as adults going to work and children educated in an actual classroom, were also radically impacted. As a result, adults were also expected to quickly adapt in order to deal with the questions raised by the young about their own security and hoped-for normalcy. With updated information and a new chapter on post-traumatic growth (PTG), the second edition of Bounce is designed to enhance the search for balance and new meaning to live life to the fullest.
In this eagerly awaited second edition of his contemporary classic, Wicks readably synthesizes vast literatures on stress and coping, trauma and loss, positive psychology and posttraumatic growth, to trace a roadmap to resilience that is as refreshing in its clarity as it is remarkable in its comprehensivenessBut more than orienting readers to the rich yield of recent research and timeless wisdom, Wicks orients them to the deeper source of learning arising from taking a fearless inventory of their own interior life and the treasures to be found in its unhurried perusal. One part mentor, one part fellow traveler, he offers his stressed and harried colleagues a cornucopia of questions which, if asked earnestly, will point out a pathway to authentic living. * Robert A. Neimeyer, PhD, Director of The Portland Institute for Loss and Transition *
Resilience is a concept and practice that many of us assume we know more about than we do, and yet developing capacities for resilience remains fundamentally important for human wellbeing and flourishing. Robert Wicks helps us develop these capacities and furthers a conversation on resilience that he's led for well over a decade, with new stories, nuggets of wisdom, and a new chapter on posttraumatic growth, among other updates to his previous edition of this book. If I were to recommend a single book on the topic of resilience, this would be it. After reading it, I feel not only more resilient; I feel more human and humane. * Allan Cole, PhD, Dean, Bert Kruger Smith Centennial Professor of Social Work, The University of Texas at Austin *
Robert J. Wicks is Professor Emeritus at Loyola University Maryland. He has published more than 50 books and has lectured on the importance of resilience, self-care, and maintaining a healthy perspective all around the world as well as at the Mayo Clinic, Yale School of Nursing, Harvard's Children's Hospital and Harvard Divinity School, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the U.S. Air Force Academy, on Capitol Hill to Members of Congress and their Chiefs of Staff.
