Box Boys and the Fairground Ride by Jenny Nimmo

The Box Boys aren't brothers, but they were born on the same day in the same year.and they have the same surname! And when they get together, John and Scott Box always find adventure of a magical kind . . . The fair has come to town and John and Scott can't wait to go. Dodgems, coconut shys, helter-skelters - and best of all the animal merry-go-round - with its brilliant colours and many different animals to ride. John chooses an elephant and Scott a giraffe, and as soon as the ride begins, they know they're in for another adventure. Faster and faster they go until suddenly they're no longer on the merry-go round, but deep in the jungle where the animals are gathering. The boys find themselves caught up in a jungle stampede - the ride of a lifetime - but will they make it safely back home?
Jenny Nimmo read avidly as a child and still does. Her first job was five years with Theatre South East, and she went on to be a governness in Italy, a photographic researcher then an Assistant Floor Manager for the BBC before becoming a writer and director for BBC children's programmmes. She had her first book children's book published in 1975 and many more were to come, including The Snow Spider, which won her the Smarties Prize in 1986.
