Originally published in 1993, this book was a Festschrift in honour of Professor Alan Blyth (1921–2000), who had been Professor of Education at the University of Liverpool and since 1965, a major influence on the study and practice of primary education in England and Wales. The theme and title were suggested by Professor Blyth, as were the contributors, all of whom had collaborated, or enjoyed other professional relationships, with him.

In attempting to analyse the concept of breadth and balance in the primary curriculum, this book draws together the views of experts which are applied to an aspect of the primary curriculum related to their work. The result is a collection of essays ranging from critiques of the National Curriculum, and general concerns within curriculum practice and thinking, to reflections on the comparative dimensions of primary education.

This broad synthesis of personal insights into the primary curriculum provided a unique basis for reflection and was a worthy contribution to the development of primary education enquiry at the time. Today it can be enjoyed in its historical context.
