Michael Barthorp was born in Wellington, New Zealand, and joined the Rifle Brigade in 1946. After being demobilized in 1948, he served as a Territorial in The Royal Hampshire Regiment before rejoining the Regular Army in The Northamptonshire Regiment to carry on a family tradition, and eventually retiring from the Royal Anglian Regiment in 1968. Since then, he's written a number of books about British Army history and uniforms, including nine titles in the Men-at-Arms series. He resides in the Channel Islands of Jersey.
