Brooke and her icky picky sister by Sandra Miller Linhart
Brooke's sister, Lee Ada, is one picky eater Not even her mother knows what to feed her. She refuses all foods, says No to each one. What will Lee Ada eat when the day is all done? This picture book for picky eaters is for kids and parents alike. Sensory Processing Disorder, also referred to as Sensory Integration Dysfunction, is a neurological disorder most often diagnosed in early childhood. It is not synonymous with learning disabled. Many children diagnosed with SPD are average or above in intellect. Understanding the challenges they face is the first step for caregivers in guiding these children in learning to tolerate their enhanced senses, and ultimately succeed in society. The SPD child must learn to navigate through the wires crossed between their senses and their brain receptors. Symptoms span a wide range between over-sensitive or under-sensitive to stimulation of any or all of their senses. One symptom is the adverse affect food (taste, smell, texture) has on their senses. Often these children are labeled as picky eaters, punished for a condition over which they have little or no control. These children have a small selection of foods (called safe foods) they're able to tolerate, sometimes making mealtimes less than enjoyable. Encouraging them to experience new textures and foods in a safe, unforced way helps the SPD child learn sensory tolerance. Sandra Miller Linhart was born and raised in a somewhat isolated, but beautiful, mountainous town in Wyoming. There she cultivated her love of the written word, as the nearest decent record store was a good two-hour drive away and the one local radio station played only country and classical music at that time. Were it not for that, Ms. Linhart might today be a rock star, or, at the very least have better taste in music. As it turned out, Lander provided a well-stocked and constantly updated library. Thus, the young Ms. Linhart often found herself taking long journeys into the wonderful worlds created by authors like Ursula K. LeGuin, Judy Blume, Madeleine L'Engle, Stephen King and, of course, Erma Bombeck in the dusty basement which contained the children's section of the Fremont County Public Library. Sandra then traveled the country as a military wife and mother of five army brats; soaking in our country's diverse and obscure cultural differences-which makes wonderful fodder for her stories. She currently lives in the mountains of Colorado but spends a majority of her time at the beach. Sandra writes in hopes of sharing her love of reading and writing with everyone. She utilizes her sociology degree and personal experience in writing children's books for caregivers, parents, and children to better connect and communicate, with the goal of healing anxieties and fears. She loves to write for children of all ages, and plans to do so until her last page is turned. Life (and how you live it) is her inspiration. Visit her website: www.sandstarbooks.com
