He was the guitarist in the Lazy Bill Lucas Blues Band for two years, performing at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1970. At Tufts (1981-1986) and Brown (1986-2013), he formed and directed an old-time Appalachian string-band ethnomusicology ensemble.
Early Downhome Blues, which earned the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Prize, Give Me This Mountain, Powerhouse for God, and the Oxford Handbook of Applied Ethnomusicology are among his eight publications. He is a pioneer in applied ethnomusicology, phenomenological ethnography, and ecomusicology, as well as a documentary photographer and filmmaker.
