Jeff Todd Titon is an Emeritus Professor of Music at Brown University, where he headed the Ph.D. program in music. From 1986 to 2013, he was enrolled in an ethnomusicology program. He is a Ph.D. holder. He earned his bachelor's degree in American Studies from the University of Minnesota, where he studied ethnomusicology, cultural anthropology, and musicology under Alan Kagan, Pertti Pelto, and Johannes Riedel. From 1971 through 1986, he taught at Tufts University, where he developed the ethnomusicology program.

He was the editor of Ethnomusicology, the Society for Ethnomusicology's publication, from 1990 to 1995. Using funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, he conducted ethnographic fieldwork throughout North America on religious folk music, blues music, and old-time fiddling. He was the guitarist in the Lazy Bill Lucas Blues Band for two years, performing at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1970. At Tufts (1981-1986) and Brown (1986-2013), he formed and directed an old-time Appalachian string-band ethnomusicology ensemble.

Early Downhome Blues, which earned the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Prize, Give Me This Mountain, Powerhouse for God, and the Oxford Handbook of Applied Ethnomusicology are among his eight publications. He is a pioneer in applied ethnomusicology, phenomenological ethnography, and ecomusicology, as well as a documentary photographer and filmmaker. On his blog, sustainablemusic.blogspot.com, you can follow his most recent study.
