Byron and the Beauty by Muharem Bazdulj

Byron and the Beauty is loosely based on Byron's biography and takes place during two weeks of October 1809, during his now famous sojourn in the Balkans. Besides being a great love story, this is also a novel about East and West, about Europe and the Balkans, about travel and friendship and cruelty. Bazdulj marvellously combines facts with imagination, history and romance, resulting in an exceptionally beautiful novel. The author's style has something of the subtle lyricism and chronicle-like tranquillity of his countryman Ivo Andric, but also a touch of the oriental baroque richness associated with Orhan Pamuk, making this a book which is both erudite and innovative, with a daring sense of humour.
Muharem Bazdulj, born in Travnik, Bosnia in 1977, is one of the leading writers of the younger generation to appear in the countries of the former Yugoslavia. He writes in a wide variety of genres, including novels, short stories, poetry, and essays; he is also active as a journalist and a translator. Bazdulj is the author of nine books so far, including the short story collections One Like a Song, 1999, Druga knjiga (Another Book), 2000, The Travnicko trojstvo (The Travnik Three) 2002, Carolija, (Magic) 2008, as well as the novels Koncert (Concert), 2003, Tranzit, kometa, pomracenje (Transit, Comet, Eclipse), 2007 and Sjetva soli ( Sowing Salt ) 2011. The Second Book, a collection of short stories, was published in English translation by Northwestern University Press in 2005.
