[George Mackay Brown] really does possess the magician's touch.. [He has] the talent to lighten up the most humdrum detail of ordinary life. - Observer

[His] prose is severely simple and beautiful; he never wastes words, but evokes a complete atmosphere in a phrase. - Scottish Field
George Mackay Brown was born in Orkney in 1921 and died there in 1996. His "The Golden Bird" was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1988, and in 1994 "Beside the Ocean of Time" was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and judged Scottish Book of the Year by the Saltire Society.
