Abraham Kuyper was a Dutch politician, journalist, statesman, and theologian who lived from 1837 to 1920. During 1901 through 1905, he served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands, founding the Anti-Revolutionary Party. Kuyper has had a huge influence on theology as well. He was a vocal opponent of the Dutch Reformed Church's liberal tendencies. In the Netherlands, this finally led to secession and the establishment of Reformed Churches.
On a number of topics, he established Neo-Calvinism, which goes beyond traditional Calvinism. Kuyper also contributed significantly to the development of the notion of common grace within the context of a Reformed worldview. Kuyper's perspective on God's role in everyday life has been particularly influential. He thought that God was constantly working in the lives of believers, and that daily happenings may reveal his handiwork.
Oh, no single piece of our mental universe is to be hermetically shut off from the rest, and there is not a square inch in the entire sphere of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry out: 'My!' Kuyper famously declared. God's actions are required for creation to continue to exist. Creation would self-destruct if he did not actively participate in it.
