From 1980 to 1988, he was the director of the National Cancer Institute and the National Cancer Program. He became the physician in chief at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1988.
He was named director of the Yale Cancer Center in 1993. He developed a treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma using combination chemotherapy at the National Cancer Institute, demonstrating that advanced tumors can be cured with medications. He is the coeditor of Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology, a cancer medicine textbook, and a former president of the American Cancer Society.
