This book looks at the types of candles which have been used over the centuries, and describes the various methods of manufacture. the humble rushlight, which utlised kitchen grease, is taken as a starting point fro which the developments leading to the modern candle or paraffin wax are traced. With reference to sources such as household inventories from the 16th century, the changing styles of candlesticks are followed. Candle lamps and lanterns are also included and many examples illustrated, along with other appliances which were once essential to candle lighting.
David J Eveleigh is Curator of Social History for the City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery at Blaise Castle House Museum. He has written several articles on aspects of social history and also the Shire Albums 'Firegrates and Kitchen Ranges', 'The Victorian Farmer', 'Old Cooking Utensils' and 'Brass and Brassware'.
