Carnivorous Nights by Crewdson Michael Mittelbach Margaret

The last known Tasmanian tiger died in Hobart Zoo in 1936. This sleek, carnivorous marsupial hasn't been seen (alive) since, and is considered to have been hunted to extinction. Smitten by an ancient stuffed tiger in their local Natural History Museum, Brooklyn naturalists Margaret Mittelbach and Michael Crewdson and their friend, artist Alexis Rockman, embark upon a treasure hunt to try and find surviving tigers in the Tasmanian jungle. The trio journey through Tasmania, encountering devils, wombats, fervent tiger hunters, bushrangers and Jurassic Park scientists. Illustrated with Rockman's artwork, originally crafted from organic materials picked up on the journey, this hugely engaging book vividly brings the tiger back to life, and recounts the story of a charming and hilarious expedition.
.an excellent book that is part travel writing, part natural history and part environmental activism, with a tendency towards the poetic rather than the preachy. It is enlivened with humour and embellished with Rockman's strong and elegant illustrations. * * The Herald * *

In its lightness of tone, Carnivorous Nights has an easy irreverence and is a spiky, enjoyable and slightly sad romp through one of the world's most interesting wild landscapes. * * The Metro * *
Naturalists MARGARET MITTELBACH and MICHAEL CREWDSON have joined forces on numerous articles for the New York Times and other publications, employing their dry wit and off-kilter sensibilities to reveal nature in the strangest places. Their previous book, Wild New York, uncovered the city's unsung wonders. They give frequent talks and lectures, and live in Brooklyn.
