Nina Bawden (1925-2012) was a well-known adult and children's author in the United Kingdom. Several of her children's stories have become modern classics, including Carrie's War, which received the Phoenix Prize, The Peppermint Pig, which won the Guardian Fiction Award, and Keeping Henry. She published nearly forty novels, slightly more than half of them are for adults, and her novel Circles of Deceit was shortlisted for the 1987 Man Booker Prize. In 2004, she was awarded the prestigious S T Dupont Golden Pen Award for a lifetime's contribution to literature, and her novel The Birds on the Trees was nominated for the Lost Booker of 1970 in 2010.
