Case-based Haematology by Shaun R Mccann

"Case-Based Haematology" is a brand new text that uses over 20 real patient cases to teach students and junior doctors to recognise and understand significant diseases in haematology. The book follows a problem-based learning approach. Each case covers the history taking, examination, investigations and management of a disease. The book discusses how to diagnose and examine a patient and how to interpret test results in a clinical setting. The book, uses colour blood films, haematology slides and patient photos to reinforce the learning and understanding. The question and answer sections tie in the underlying science, build further knowledge and understanding, and reinforce investigative skills. "Case-Based Haematology" is a perfect resource for medical students and junior doctors to use in their attachments and is a rapid reminder and a revision aid for exams and OSCEs.
This thin volume has value to the medical student and junior doctor beyond its bulk..it guides the reader through 20 cases that illustrate, extraordinarily clearly, many if not most of the important principles of clinical haematology...this book is highly recommended and should be made available to all medical students, junior doctors and internal medical trainees. Haematologists in training would find it of use also, particularly in developing teaching techniques and modules. internal Medicine Journal, 2006. This text book conveys a great deal of useful and practical information. In particular, the chapter on blood transfusion was both succinct and highly informative... ...this text book is good value for money and largely achieves the goals set out by Professor McCann in his preface. It should prove very useful to both medical undergraduates and to junior doctors. P.T. Murphy, The Irish Journal of Medical Science, Volume 174, Number 3 It is an excellent textbook for an undergraduate medical student studying haematology as part of a broader course in medicine. The problem-based learning approach in the textbook is complimentary to many undergraduate courses where much of the teaching is based on a similar methodology. It is very well written, up-to-date and easy to read, as well as pleasing on the eye. The quality of the presentation and graphics is outstanding. Dr Mary Frances McMullin, Irish Medical Times, April 2005. This text should achieve its aim of helping the tyro develop powers of logic and deduction and to appreciate the importance of linking his or her clinical activities to familiarity with laboratory practice. Mitchell Lewis, Department of Haematology, Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK, review in British Journal of Haematology, Vol 130 Issue 4. This book would be a good resource for the clinical team, the library or your own collection. Barry Quinn, President of The European Blood and Marrow Transplantation Nurses Group The book is excellent, clear, and informative. A good learning tool for undergraduates and even for haematologists in training. I like very much the format and particularly the schemes and inserts with key-points. Professor of Medicine / Haematology, University Hospital, Barcelona
