The Cat Ate My Gymsuit by Paula Danziger

Thirteen year old Marcy lacks self-confidence and feels weighed down by problems: she's afraid of her father, convinced she's so fat she'll never have a date, and bored by school. Then along comes Ms Finney - a young, fun, new teacher - and life takes on new meaning. But just as things start to improve for Marcy, Ms Finney is suspended from school. Can Marcy stand up for herself - and her teacher - and fight for what she believes to be right?
The author has a sympathetic eye for the ups and downs of her characters and a quick ear for adolescent conversation* HORN BOOK *
