The Cat Who Liked Rain by Henning Mankell
This is the story of young Lucas who gets a most precious present for his birthday, a black kitten which he calls Night. Lucas becomes very attached to Night but one day Lucas comes home from school and discovers that his beloved cat has disappeared. He is desperate and no one is able to console him. He searches for Night everywhere and doesn't stop hoping for his return. It's only sometime later that Night appears in his dreams and tells him that he had to leave to see the world, just as Lucas will do one day when he has grown up. A wise, gentle and moving story unlike anything Mankell has ever written."Beautiful and moving - a modern fairy tale." * Carousel *
"Touching and wise, this is also a richly enjoyable story." * Books for Keeps *
"This is a beautifully written, powerful story. Follow Lukas as he seeks understanding on his emotional journey - and share his dreams." * Families Magazine *
"The quality of writing shines through, and for the right child it will prove both thoughtful and moving." * School Librarian *
Henning Mankell (1948-2015) became a worldwide phenomenon with his crime writing, gripping thrillers and atmospheric novels set in Africa. His prizewinning and critically acclaimed Inspector Wallander Mysteries continue to dominate bestseller lists all over the globe and his books have been translated into forty-five languages and made into numerous international film and television adaptations: most recently the BAFTA-award-winning BBC television series Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh.
Driven by a desire to change the world and to fight against racism and nationalism, Mankell devoted much of his time to working with charities in Africa, including SOS Children’s Villages and PLAN International, where he was also director of the Teatro Avenida in Maputo.
