Catherine Cookson by Kathleen Jones
Born in 1906 as the illegitimate daughter of a domestic servant, Cookson's childhood was marred by violence, alcoholism, shame and guilt. Despite her literary success she was haunted by the failure of her relationship with her mother, and riven by religious doubts. Her legendary generosity is contrasted with a darker picture of her life.
Kathleen Jones was born in 1947 and brought up in the Lake District where she now lives. She spent eleven years in Africa and the Middle East, before returning to England and writing her first biography in 1991. Other biographies followed and she has written short fiction, journalism and a collection of poetry.
