Catherine of Deepdale by Millie Vigor
When Catherine Jameson leaves Southampton and arrives in Shetland with her husband, Robbie, her dream of an idyllic life on an island is rudely shattered. His home is a croft devoid of any convenience and her mother-in-law does not hide her dislike of her son's English wife. Undaunted, Catherine is determined to adapt to her new life, but when Robbie drowns in a fishing accident, and a short time later she finds she is pregnant, she is devastated. Will she go home to her family? Or will she stay and try to carry out the plans that Robbie had and that she had promised to help him with? And if she stays will the magic of the islands bring her happiness again?
Millie Vigor was born in Dorset and was educated at Ludwell village school. At age fourteen she left and started work and she considers this the beginning of her real education. Throughout her many jobs; kitchenmaid, farm-worker, glove-maker, canteen cook and B&B landlady she took note of what made people tick and of sights and sounds, and stored this all away to use later, in her writing. In addition to articles and short stories sold to various magazines, her autobiographical book, Kippers for Breakfast, was published in 2003. She lives in Shetland with her constant companion, a cat called Harriet.
