Celebrating the Crone by Ruth Gardner
Urging the reader to embrace silver hairs, wrinkles and the change of life, this text shows how to create your own ceremony of age and to recognise the power, wisdom and the Goddess within.Patricia Monaghan (1946 - 2012), one of the founders of the contemporary world spirituality movement, spent more than 20 years investigating and writing about alternative perspectives of the earth. She considered herself fortunate to have learnt the ecology of the taiga, or subarctic forest, while growing up in Alaska, where much of her family still resides. Before focusing on the impact of mythic frameworks on our daily lives, she worked as a writer and reporter on science and energy issues. Her recognition of the link between ecological devastation and the oppression of the feminine in Western civilization was influenced by the universal conception of the earth as feminine--as a goddess, known to the Greeks as Gaia. Since then, most of her work has focused on the role of feminine power in our world, in an inclusive and multicultural manner.
Patricia, an ardent traveler, had studied earth spirituality and goddess worship on three continents and traveled extensively around Europe, particularly in Ireland. She was a dual citizen of the United States and Ireland, and she edited two anthologies of current Irish-American writing. Patricia McDermott was a resident faculty member at DePaul University's School for New Learning in Chicago, where she taught science and literature. She died in November 2012, and is survived by her husband, Dr. Michael McDermott.
